St Cleres School — Phase 1 — New teaching block

The brief

Commissioned by Thurrock Council at feasibility stage to design and manage a new 7-classroom teaching block with library, offices and pupil WCs for St Clere’s School, Stanford-le-Hope — bright teaching space to expand the school’s secondary provision.

Constraints

  • Live secondary school site, with the block sited on an underused part of the grounds close to existing teaching areas
  • Programme of June to September 2018, so the block had to open for the autumn term
  • A shortfall in office accommodation to be addressed within the same footprint
  • Procured through a framework on a two-stage basis

Our role

Feasibility, architectural design, project management and CDM. The feasibility study showed that only off-site construction could meet the programme, so the block was designed as a steel frame with insulated wall panels manufactured off site and assembled on site.

Outputs

  • Feasibility options and preferred-option report
  • Planning application and developed design
  • Two-stage framework tender and contractor appointment (February 2018)
  • Project management and CDM duties through construction
  • Site inspections and handover

Result

Completed on programme and within budget for September 2018, so the school could take its expanded intake, and it set the template for the larger Phase 2 that followed.
